2002 Dodge Viper GTS Final Edition

2002 Dodge Viper GTS Final Edition

Seller's description

The Dodge Viper roadster was launched in 1991, but it wasn’t until 1996 that a new generation coupé model called the GTS was introduced, with raised sections in the roof above each seat to accommodate the use of helmets, a reworked engine with more power and less weight, and a redesigned chassis and suspension.
The GTS could complete the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds, slightly faster than its predecessor, and its top speed was increased to a breathtaking 185 mph. Later cars also featured ABS braking, 18″ diameter wheels and tyres, and lightweight hypereutectic pistons.
In 2002, a special GTS ‘Final Edition’ model was announced to commemorate the last of these second generation coupés to roll off the production line. The ‘Final Edition’ was limited to just 360 cars, and was the first production Viper to be painted in red with dual white stripes running across the roof and bonnet, paying tribute to the famous Oreca GTS-R/T race cars that took the outright win at the 24 Hours of Daytona race in 2000 and the Teams’ Championship in the GTS category of the American Le Mans Series in 1999 and 2000.
In addition to the special paint scheme, a number of other details distinguished the ‘Final Edition’ from previous second generation Vipers – the interior featured a unique red-stitched, black leather steering wheel and shift knob, as well as a sequentially numbered plaque on the dashboard which recognised each individual car in the series.

EQUIPMENT

Left-hand-drive, Dual front airbags, CD player, Power windows, Leather seats.

EXTERIOR

Finished in its special edition colour to celebrate the successful Le Mans series wins, the paint remains in excellent condition with a deep stunning shine. Everything about the GTS Final Edition screams ‘muscle’, from the squat stance and wickedly aerodynamic shape to the twin white racing stripes running down the centre of the car. The GTS still remains true to the model’s racing origins, with helmet-enabling bulbous roof sections over each seat and distinctive front air vents.
This example of the GTS Final Edition is in wonderful condition, demanding attention from every one of its cut and purposeful angles.

INTERIOR

Compared to the first generation Viper, this immaculate GTS is relatively well-appointed inside with black leather seats, dual front airbags and power windows. The dash is also black, with white instrument gauges. Unique to the Final Edition is the black, three-spoke steering wheel with subtle red stitching, as well as the gearshift knob with red trim.
Next to the gear shift is an understated plaque bearing the legend ‘GTS Final Edition’ and this car’s individual number in the production run – 67 out of just 360.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The GTS’s 8-litre water-cooled V10 Viper-emblazoned engine is a beast, and one of the largest engines ever installed in a production car – it comes as no surprise to learn that it was originally based on a truck engine. Longitudinally-mounted in the front of the car under a huge bonnet, it provides astounding speed and immediate throttle response with the V10 thunder enhanced further by a Corsa exhaust.
Transmission is through the Borg Warner T-56 six-speed overdrive manual system and since arrival into the UK, marque specialists IGS carried out a full gearbox overhaul; replacing bearings and synchros where appropriate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The optional lightweight GTS-R 19” diameter wheels sparkle in their original chrome finish. They remain in good condition and come wrapped in Michelin Super Sport to front and Michelin Sport Cup to rear. This particular example benefits from the Stoptech front brake kit which provides both exceptional feel and durability.

HISTORY FILE

A West Coast car from new, this VIper arrived in the UK in early 2014 where it was immediately received by marque specialist IGS of Surrey. After careful preparation for UK registration, the gearbox was inspected and synchros and bearings replaced before a subsequent rolling road print out shows the car making a healthy 449hp, 1hp short of factory specification!
A full book pack, inclusive of owners manual, warranty information and both chassis / powertrain diagnostic procedure books are present in the history file alongside a valid MOT, V5 certificate and the spare key.
